We have been waiting for December 1st for a long time. Probably before we even knew we were waiting for that day. Probably since we made the decision for Tyler to leave the Air Force and go back to school. December 1st is the day dental schools start accepting people into their programs. In July, Tyler took the DAT and applied to schools. He had an interview in September and one in November and was sure one of them were going to accept him on DECEMBER 1st. They keep accepting people throughout the year, but he had built this one day up so much that if he didn't get accepted this day, this first day possible, he was going to probably die. I have been half dreading this day and anticipating it for months.
This is what he looked like at 7:30 this morning....
(This is a reenactment) He was lying on the couch and I went to sit by him. He was seriously so sad that I wanted to cry. He had gotten up early and checked his email to find nothing significant and by 7:30 was sure the day would be a bust. I was dreading the rest of my day and starting to plan on paying for him to go to the 2 more interviews that he had scheduled in January and March. His phone alarmed in the bedroom and we were both so sad by this point, neither one of us even wanted to walk in to turn it off. Hadlee, oblivious to the mood of the room, jumped up to get the phone and we heard her talking....to someone. I watched her say that yes, her dad was here and to hang on and passed the phone to Tyler. He sat up and in a split second the whole day changed directions. He was smiling and happy and before he got off the phone, he said, "Thank you, you made my day." He didn't wait to tell me what happened, he just jumped up and gave me a big hug. We were standing in the middle of the room hugging and Calvin came over and hugged us both and said, "I wuv you guys." (all excited like) We started laughing. I asked Tyler which school it was, secretly hoping it was Loma Linda. and it was. This is what he looked like for the rest of the day.
I was starting to think we were the kind of people who couldn't catch a break. Wondering if the past 5 years had been a mistake and a waste. I am sorry to be one of those people who even think such things, but I was. I am so happy to see his hard work pay off and have him succeed and know that he can accomplish something like this. Because I think it's an accomplishment to even get into dental school. I know he will do well there too. I was nothing but proud. Tomorrow we will worry about how to pay for it.
