Preschool

Calvin has been in preschool for about 3 months. The week before he started, I wondered if I would make it through the week. I specifically remember two instances that brought me to that conclusion.

1. Monday- I put laundry in washers and realized I was out of dryer sheets. I loaded the kids in the car to accomplish the simple mission of buying some at the grocery store. How hard is that, right? The 5 seconds it took us to get out of the car and to the doors of the store were all Calvin needed to disappear. gone. The store is in a shopping center so I started looking in stores I thought he might be in. The ice cream store, Subway, stores we had been before. Just when I was about ready to start calling 911, Calvin came running toward me holding this:

"Look, Ma, monkey!" He had stolen a movie from the hardware store. Luckily no one noticed when I walked into the store with it and put it back on the shelf.

2. Tuesday- Hadlee and Calvin were outside playing. After a while Hadlee came in for a minute. About 3 minutes later I went to make sure Calvin was still outside and he was still right there playing. I waited a few more minutes and checked again. Gone. I walked around our building looking for him and when I got to the back I saw him coming out of the housing office with two ladies who work there. One just happens to be over all of campus housing. Apparently Calvin got into an open minivan. So I had to stand there while Head of Housing Lady lectured me about how she could have driven off with him in the van. Anyway, the whole situation ended with them asking if there was something wrong with him since he didn't really talk and me crying.

The rest of the week wasn't as hard but after starting my week like that it was hard to recover.

School came just in time. His school was only 4 hours a day in Price so I wondered if he would be okay with the 8am-2pm schedule but he did great. I just sent him with his gluten free/dairy free lunch everyday and he loved it. He has learned so much in the past few months.

He has even mastered some of the goals on his IEP. He can match all upper case letters and he can match all lower case letters and he is potty trained. (Thought it would never happen.) Since that report he is doing amazingly well with his numbers too. He knows all the numbers 1-10 by sight and even most of them up to 20. He is getting so much better at communicating too. He has about a week and a half break and then he will start summer school. It's 4 hours a day for 6 weeks and he can't wait for it to start again.

Calvin with his teacher Cindy and one of the classroom aides, Connie. He loves them both.

They have these hopscotches along the sidewalk outside the classroom doors and he has to stop at everyone and point to the numbers and count.

He has some compulsive tendencies that I was worried about for a while, but there are days I wonder if the compulsions will be his saving grace. He needs more repetition when it comes to learning than Hadlee did and I think him compulsively naming letters and numbers and saying letter sounds might be the only way he would learn it. I guess time will tell, but I am so proud of how far he has come.

Ououououch!!!

About 2 years ago I was in Wal-mart with Hadlee and we heard a girl screaming. Not just screaming like she wanted a toy her mom wouldn't buy her, screaming like she was being tortured and killed right there in the supercenter. Hadlee was very upset about it and asked what was wrong with the little girl. I told her that she was getting her ears pierced and it didn't seem to be going very well. I think that moment has haunted her.

We have asked her numerous times, when presented with the opportunity, if she wanted to get her ears pierced and the answer has always been a very sure "NO." Until yesterday. We were at the mall and I asked her and she said yes. Luckily we had the camera or we might have had to call the whole thing off. She seemed really nervous about it while we were waiting, and I told her a few times she didn't have to get it done.

She kept saying that her friends said it didn't really hurt. I explained to her, that maybe her friends didn't remember, but it was going to hurt a bit. It would feel like a shot in her ear. Even though she was nervous, she did a great job.

Marks on the ears and waiting for holes. She didn't want to hold my hand.

The shock

The second ear she wanted to hold my hand
Calvin hanging out by the earrings. A couple times he yelled, "Ma, look, hurt ears." He still wanted to have it done after Hadlee was finished though. He kept trying to get us to let him get in the chair.

Finished and a treat to ease the pain.
Feeling good in the food court.

He will just have to pretend he has holes in his ears, because he isn't getting an earring anytime soon.

I have mixed emotions about it. Part of me wonders if we should have let her get her ears pierced now. If you pierce their ears too soon, are they more likely to end up with earrings up and down their ears and a nose ring, or was that just me? Part of me, though, is really proud of her for deciding she wanted to do something and doing it even though it was scary. After it was done she said, "I thought I was going to change my mind, but then I remembered I wanted to be pretty and cute."

Not sure I agree with the motive. She has always been pretty and cute to me, but I am her mama.

Slippery Little Suckers

Hadlee and Calvin both had some cute goggles when we moved here. I thought they were going to be perfect for the beach and it seemed they felt the same way. The first couple times anyway.
The penguins are Calvin's goggles and the flower ones were Hadlee's.
After going to the beach a few times, Hadlee was playing in the water and Calvin took her goggles to her, insisting that she put them on. So she took them from him and got down in the water and just let go. She just let go. When I asked her about it, she said she didn't want to wear them. ?????? Seriously.

So I lectured her the whole way home from the beach (don't feel too badly for her, it's only a block away). I told her we had to take care of our things, they cost money, we can't just buy new things when she decides to just LET GO OF THEM IN THE OCEAN! After listening for a few minutes she said, "Mom, when I have a little girl and she lets go of her goggles in the ocean, I am not going to be mad at her. I am just going to give her a hug."

Fast-forward to yesterday.
Hadlee: Mom, I really don't think it's fair that parents just get to do whatever they want all day and kids can't.
Me: Hadlee, do you think if I could pick whatever I wanted to do all day, it would be dishes, laundry, cleaning, and cooking? Not to mention saying, 'NO CALVIN' 8 million times?
Hadlee: Yeah.
Me: Hmmm

I guess she is right, this is what I want to be doing, but sometimes I forget that and I am glad she is here to remind me. She has said many other doozies in the past little while that I want to remember, but that's all I can come up with right now. And by remember I mean share with everyone. Remember, this is in no way a journal.

Fine Lines

And no, I am not talking about the ones on my face. I am referring to the ones I struggle with daily. The ones I am trying to teach my children, but don't always have perfected myself. Here are some of the fine lines I have been thinking about lately.

  • We need to take care of our possessions, but possessions really don't matter.

  • Stand up for yourself, but don't be a bully.

  • Be nice, but don't let everyone walk all over you.

  • You should tell people how you feel, but sometimes keep your mouth shut.

  • Be loving, non-judgmental and accept everyone, but knowing what is right and wrong.

  • Serve others but don't let people take advantage.

  • We should always try to look nice, but looks aren't the most important thing
  • Drinking enough diet coke, but not too much.
(That last one is more for me than my kids.)

The Downfall

I made a huge mistake that has led to the downfall of my blog. I called it any form of a journal. In retrospect, that was the stupidest thing I could have done and I am regretting it every second of every day. I just haven't felt like blogging. Like many of my other "journals", it has also fallen by the wayside.
I am reformatting.
I am only going to call it a blog.
A way to stay connected with everyone.
Nothing more.
Do you hear me universe?
Hopefully, I will be back soon with some serious updates. Good thing Tyler posted some videos a while ago.Hadlee painted her toenails by herself the other day. One of the most sacred milestones.
