Calvin needed to get some blood drawn and since he didn't have school for Election Day, we decided to go get it done. When we got there we found out he also had to pee in a cup. I laughed out loud when the technician told me that. I told him that we had never done that before but it should be okay. Right? Well it would have been great if Hadlee hadn't shut the light off half way through. I mean, I guess it was still okay because he peed in the cup but when the light went off, I got pee all over my hand and the outside of the cup. Oh, the joys of motherhood. If I make it through the day without some kind of bodily fluid on me, I call it a success.
Then it was time for his blood to be drawn. The technicians started talking to him like they would any 5 year old. Like he was going to understand. I finally stopped them and had to explain that he had an Autistic Spectrum Disorder and he didn't really know what they were saying. As I fought back the tears threatening to fall from my eyes, and took a few deep breaths, I explained it to him in a way he could understand. "It's going to hurt, it's okay, hold still." I hope the time will come when I can explain things that are hard without almost crying.
He was such a good boy. He cried a little when they stuck the needle in and kept telling me to, "shh, shh, shh," in his ear. When it was over he chuckled with relief and then when they gave him stickers, he laughed and told them, "Thank you." They were laughing because I don't think they get that reaction a lot. Hadlee also got some stickers which she gave to Calvin because she was so proud of him for being a good boy. (sometimes I don't know where she came from, she can be so sweet.)
Here is Calvin in the car with the cast he made out of stickers and his bandage.

After we were done, we went to Wal-mart and bought Toy Story 3. What a great day for it to come out. Calvin was so good, it was the perfect time to buy it for him.
We had driven 45 minutes to get the blood drawn, 15 more minutes to Walmart, and 55 minutes of our drive home when traffic stopped. It was stopped for almost 20 minutes when I couldn't take the car with my kids anymore. We were only 5 minutes from home and there isn't an alternate route. When I had the chance I pulled into Pounders and let my kids get in the water with their clothes on.

After playing for an hour or so, traffic started moving again and we got to go home. It was a bit of an emotional day but it ended well; with the beach and some Toy Story 3.

Sounds like Calvin did awesome. My oldest had to get his blood drawn when he was 5. They rounded up every phlebotomist there. One to entertain my young kids. One to insert the need and two to hold him. He was also sitting on my lap and I was holding him. He did really well but I am guess with all that prep they have had some really bad experiences.
That's awesome Calvin did so good! You are such a good mom, that's probably why he is a stud!!!
